My earlier articles about projects using pallets seem to have been a big hit – they’ve certainly had a lot of visitors. I’ve been working on my own project with local school children to create vertical planters and these are due to be finished off next week, so I’ll do a piece on that project and the lessons I’ve learned. I’m still collecting examples of novel recycled uses of old wooden things and so here are a few more pictures of some other interesting ideas. If you have any ideas or examples of your own, please send me some pictures!

This amazing shed is made out of old fruit trays. you can see that they’re from the ‘Royal Fruit Farm’ at Sandringham, Norfolk! (For those who don’t know, Sandringham is one of the grand residences of the British Royal family – about 30 miles away from Old School Garden and a lovely landscape with some beautiful trees)

Here’s a super example of the ways in which pallets can be reused and how they can be finished off to look like an up market product. These pallets have been taken apart, reassembled and sanded off to give a smooth surface. Laid like giant decking tiles they create a pleasing, practical terrace. Note that it uses quite thick planks, an important consideration if the floor is to bear body weight!

I knew pallets could be used for wonderful things… after seeing your blog, I’m convinced. Just absolutely wonderful things here. :)))
Thanks, that’s great! Any ideas you can make yourself?
I was telling Skip that it would be interesting to make a ‘deck’ if I could find something simple, not a lot of pallets to have to get…. for a small above ground swimming pool he’s putting up for me to exercise in.
It’s just a simple 15 ft. pool, 3 1/2-4 ft. deep. I wonder if you have a suggestion. I was thinking of making stacking ‘like wide steps’… up to near top… using plywood for ‘floor’…. then, covering with outdoor carpet.
Just my idea… I have a lot of them as my imagination is always working overtime. :)))
Sounds interesting- all I’d say is make sure the pallets you use are strong enough to hold a human (without implying or knowing what you or anyone else weigh of course!) and ensure they are firmly fixed together and to the pool construction where necessary, and of course they’ll need to be sanded to a smooth finish unless you cover them with carpet, as you suggest.. Watch my blog tomorrow for a post about a project I’ve been doing with my local school to create pallet planters..:)
Nigel, thank- you for the advice… and I will look forward to tomorrow’s post, and future posts. Your blog is so interesting, inspiring. I’m glad to have met you. :))) Gloria
Thanks Gloria- glad you’re enjoying it 🙂

Really love the shed Nigel.
Me too- especially the Norfolk connection!
