Old School Garden 
Such superbly Dr Suess-like flowers which I love – but have never had much luck growing them. Do they need marshy conditions?
This particular Frittilary (Fritillaria meleagris) is a native of flood plains across most of Europe, usually in rather dry fen vegetation on alkaline soil. It is easily grown in grass or well-drianed soil in sun or half shade, that doesn’t dry out in summer- the latter point may be the key to yoru lack of success?
Thanks so much Nigel – the drying out in summer is probably the key and I think they get easily dug out when weeding once the flowers are over. Might try again …
