IMG_8801You may have read previously that one of my latest projects involves designing, and then helping to install a new border alongside a 200-year-old ‘Crinkle Crankle’ Wall, near Fakenham town centre, Norfolk. I’m not sure about the history of the wall, but it seems to have enclosed a substantial garden for an important house next to the Church (possibly the old Vicarage or Rectory?). There’s certainly evidence of lean-to glasshouses on some (straight) parts of the wall, which are all ‘listed’ as being of historic or architectural interest.

Crinkle Crankle walls have an interesting history, as Wikipedia says:

‘A crinkle crankle wall, also known as a crinkum crankum, serpentine, ribbon or wavy wall, is an unusual type of garden wall.

The crinkle crankle wall economizes on bricks, despite its sinuous configuration, because it can be made just one brick thin. If a wall this thin were to be made in a straight line, without buttresses, it would easily topple over. The alternate convex and concave curves in the wall provide stability and help it to resist lateral forces.

Both crinkle and crankle are defined as something with bends and turns (Webster’s), but the term is also thought to come from Old English meaning zig-zag. The earliest reference to this meaning has been cited in 1598, but it was not until the 18th century that the term began to be applied to wavy walls. At that time these garden walls were usually aligned east-west, so that one side faced south (Dictionary of Architecture and Landscape Architecture by James Stevens Curl) to catch the warming sun and were historically used for growing fruit.

Many crinkle crankle walls are found in the East Anglia area of England where the marshes of the fen country were drained by Dutch engineers starting in the mid-1600s. The walls’ construction is attributed to these engineers who called them slange muur, meaning snaking wall……’

The Fakenham wall (which must be one of the oldest surviving examples in the U.K.), now encloses the Town’s Community Centre, Registry Office and other community buildings and the surrounding site is mainly laid to grass, with some areas of mature trees and more formal borders. Next to the wall is an old asphalt tennis court (no longer in use) and the border immediately in front was covered in weeds (mainly Alkanet- it has a pretty blue flower, but also has tough tap roots and is a real ‘spreader’), as well as a large area of Hemerocallis (Day Lily). Perhaps a legacy from the wall’s days as a backdrop for fruit growing, each ‘bay’ created by the wavy wall has a fruit tree- apple, cherry or fig. These old trees are all looking rather uncared for and one of my first jobs was to cut back the fig which was covering one of the old brick and slate seats that once must have been used to watch the tennis. Here’s what the area looked like at the start of the project….

The clients (the Community Centre and the Gardening in Fakenham Town – GiFT project) have ideas for improving this wider area and perhaps encouraging it as a space for wedding photos, outdoor events etc. The brief was to come up with a planting plan for the border in front of the south -facing wall to better show off its features, use plants that require limited maintenance and which can cope with the poor soil and aspect.

My design involved limited pruning of the other fruit trees, thinning out the large area of Day Lilies and using the thinnings to create a continuous ribbon of these around the base of the wall, and introducing a few shrubs and sub shrubs (Buddleja and Lavender) at key points. These, and a range of herbaceous perennials and grasses were positioned to provide contrasting textures and forms within a broadly colour-themed series of ‘waves’ to pick up the shape of the wall, and taking account of the other strong structural features of the seats and fruit trees.

These waves are alternating combinations of mainly blue and red; blue and yellow and with purple (including purple foliage) to tie these together as a more continuous ribbon through the whole scheme. In addition a selection of different grasses (including Stipa gigantea and Miscanthus sinensis) have been used around each seat to provide a taller, contrasting, soft veil effect with both flowers and foliage to catch the sunlight. I also suggested that old bricks, to harmonise with the wall, could be laid as flooring in front of each seat, softened with ad hoc planting of varieties of Thyme. The first of these seating areas has been used to pilot this and it is hoped that further work will be done to complete the other areas as voluntary help and materials become available.

Children from the local Junior School were involved alongside a handful of volunteers to help me clear the border, prepare the soil and then to plant it up. Here’s how it looked after clearing and planting up…

The final scheme involved planting over 200 plants supplied in the main by Howard Nursery of Wortham, Suffolk and Taverham Nursery Centre, Norfolk. The planting has deliberately been placed closer together than would ultimately be necessary, so as to speed up the ground coverage and so reduce the need for weeding. However, not surprisingly, some roots of the Alkanet remain and have started to sprout once more, so the border will need to be carefully managed to ensure the plants survive and the weeds are removed in its early days.

This week, the children from the Junior School returned to carry out the ‘first weed’ since planting and to draw the wall and look out for insects etc. This marked the formal completion of the project. Here are some pictures of that event…

This has been an interesting and enjoyable project and I look forward to seeing the border in a few months once it has become better established and to seeing progress on the improvements to the wider area. It’s been a busy May, Walter- ‘as usual’ I suppose you  might say! The last couple of days have seen heavy rain, but thankfully I managed to get out for a full day in Old School Garden on Monday, anticipating the rain by planting out lots of seedlings. This stage of the year also coincides with the cleaning of the (now empty) greenhouse and getting in the 12 different varieties of tomato and chillies my friend Steve has given me – plus a cucumber.

Today, as the weather is clearing up I’ll be out putting in a cane framework up which to train them. Or rather, most of them, as this year Steve has given me two varieties of tomato which don’t require tying in and training as cordons. Roma is a ‘determinate’ variety so should be grown as a bush (it doesn’t need it’s side shoots pinching out), and Marmande is ‘semi determinate’ which means limited pinching out is required. He’s also given me a ‘ridge’ cucumber which I’m going to try to grow outside in a pot.

I’m also feeling quite pleased that I managed to find a good use for the old compost I removed from the greenhouse. I grow my tomatoes in bottomless pots sunk into the ground (the so-called ‘ring culture’ method), so a dozen holes need to be dug to make way for the pots which are then filled with growbag and other compost. I’ve used the old compost in a plastic bin that once ‘graced’  the courtyard – you may remember I’d bought some rather nice large terracotta pots to replace the utilitarian plastic dustbin and pots that previously contained the peach and an olive bush? Any way, I thought I’d have a go at growing some carrots in the dustbin and the old compost. This is very friable and lacks any stones, so seems the perfect medium for this. So the bin is full and I’ll hopefully get round to sowing the carrots later today – they’re a variety called ‘Nigel’ given to me at Christmas by Steve and his wife!

The rest of the kitchen garden is also looking pretty full- potatoes have been earthed up a couple of times and the first flowers are forming on the first earlies. The Brassica cage is also looking increasingly full with Cauliflowers, Calabrese, Spinach and Broccoli. Rainbow Chard and Leeks are bulking up and the first Broad Beans look like they’ll be ready to pick very soon. My sowings of Parsnip, Carrot and Beetroot are also coming along nicely. We’ve had plenty of Lettuce in the last couple of weeks. The Strawberry bed has been mulched with straw and as a bit of fun I’ve bought a plastic owl with a swiveling head to see if I can deter pigeons and other birds from the swelling fruit and other goodies in the garden (they usually go for my raspberries which are also looking promising this year)!

I’ve just about managed to catch up with the major weeding- just one area of the woodland edge to do and then I think I’ll mulch this with wood chippings to try to keep the weeds down. I’m hoping to do the same in the fruit cage once I’ve been through with the hoe later today. Oh, and some good news. You remember we had that extension put on about ten years ago that created Deborah’s Study? Well, I had to move a rather old Philadelphus bush and so put it in the main mixed border as a back drop to other things. It’s never flowered since, despite some careful successive pruning out of old wood, and encouragement of new growth. Well, it may be weather-related, but its covered with flower buds this year – I’ll post a pic when it comes out!

I’ve still got some half-hardy annuals coming through (I spent a couple of hours inside the shed potting these up while it poured down outside, yesterday). However,  I’ve managed to plant out most of these and especially the front bed which is my ‘homage’ to Victorian bedding and one or two other spots to add complementary colour or texture to perennials that will flower later- e.g. putting some golden-yellow looking Amaranthus in with the blue Agapanthus.

Several things are looking good here, including the rapidly filling mixed borders, so here’s a slide show of some of the highlights.

Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get the number of takers necessary to run the various gardening courses I’d planned for May and June, but I’ll try again the autumn, which seems the time most people do an evening class, especially if it’s garden -related. My work in other gardens has also been rather hectic. The sessions at Fakenham Academy have really begun to take off. The children seem more focused and interested and are starting to ‘own’ their plots, which are fast filling up with all sorts of food crops and some annual flowers to add colour and scent as well as attracting the pollinators of course. Unfortunately an assortment of pests is also posing a challenge- rabbits, mice and pigeons in the main. So remedial action has been necessary to try to prevent further damage- we had great fun last week trying to erect a pigeon-proof cage over the brassicas!

We’ve also got some tomatoes, cucumber and aubergines growing in the greenhouse. Also in Fakenham the project at the Community Centre to clear and plant a border next to the two hundred year old ‘crinkle crankle’ wall, has gone well. I, together with volunteers and children from the local primary school, planted this up last week. Now we wait for the plants – which I’ve positioned in repeating drifts of different colours, textures and forms to reflect the wave of the wall -to get hold and push on to do their stuff. I’ll post some pictures of this next week.

I was also pleased to be positively mentioned by one of the Inspectors at a recent Ofsted Inspection at the local primary school, where I was showing the children how to weed and earth up potatoes and explaining why we do this. This school (which now has level 5 of the RHS Campaign for School Gardening award), is shortly to host a training session for other local schools interested in school gardening activities. I’ll let you know how it goes.

How is your garden looking, Walter? I expect your orchard has  finished flowering by now, but I have fond memories of visiting you and Lise one spring and seeing all the beautiful blossom there. From my own garden, it looks like we’ll have another good year for fruit- there certainly seem to be a lot of plums forming on the tree and I can even seen some (and cherries) on the young fan- trained plants in the kitchen garden.

So, I think its getting to that time of year when we can take the foot off the accelerator a little and begin to enjoy the fruits of our labours! Hopefully that last major bit of weeding will be done by the end of the week and I can then get the remaining flowers planted out, as well as hoeing here and there to keep the weeds down. And maybe then a bit more sitting in the sun!

Having said that, I do think there’s something very satisfying about forking into a light, damp soil and pulling whole strands of Ground Elder root out (and of course trying not to breaking any of it off in the ground)!

I taught Brandon how to garden with one real hope in mind… That he would one day share this knowledge with the younger generation… So imagine my delight when I had the opportunity to not only facilitate this moment, but capture the moment photographically…

What we do as gardeners is essentially an investment in the future… A garden is the seed that will one day grow…

Early Years Gardening in Small Spaces

IMG_8734On Tuesday I attended the latest meeting of the national Landscapes for Early Childhood Network, at the Earlham Early Years Centre in Norwich. The Network, which I joined last year, brings together  professionals working with young children and those concerned with designing and creating play and other landscapes for them. It provides a powerful creative forum for discussion of ideas and approaches to early years spaces and activities and also gives a wonderful opportunity to visit excellent examples of these landscapes, sometimes in schools or nurseries, sometimes in public open spaces.

I was pleased to speak at this week’s meeting on the topic of ‘learning for sustainability’ (or as I termed it ‘Nurturing Nurture’) – how we encourage children (and adults for that matter), to understand the way the world works, how mankind’s activities affect this and what can be done to live more sustainably. I talked about the word ‘sustainability’ and how this has become rather diluted and misused in modern language, but is really about maintaining an ecological balance in the world where non renewable natural resources are used (and reused) carefully, if at all.

I featured some of my own work in this field, especially working with youngsters in school gardening activities as well as creating play landscapes and other spaces which inspire younger children to develop their curiosity, imagination and understanding of the natural world. I focused in particular on the importance of engaging children in food growing as a way of contributing towards food production and security.

Presentations were also given by other network members on their work, but the main event was to see and hear about the very special ‘garden’  at the Earlham EYC. Felicity Thomas, the original head teacher and her colleagues gave us a wonderful guided tour of the garden (it was great seeing the children busy in it as we went around), and told us about why and how it had been developed. The brief for the original design (which has since evolved over the last ten years), is worth sharing, so I repeat it below along with a slide show of pictures I took (which for security reasons do not include the children).  I hope you enjoy them.

‘To create a unique environment for children and others using the Centre which demonstrates sustainable principles in practice, where children can:-

  • access a varied topography in scale, contour and texture, incorporating dramatic changes in level, big mounds, large areas of sand in which to prospect.

  • plant, grow, harvest and cook food.

  • hide and not be seen, find and create places for refuge and reflection; read, share stories and use their imagination.

  • go on expeditions and journeys; develop an understanding of positional words by having places to be in, under, behind, below and above.

  • experience and understand the elements; interact with moving water, solar power and wind, be protected from the sun.

  • explore their senses through plants, materials and elements which provide a myriad of colour, shape, sound, texture and smell.

  • independently access equipment and loose materials.

  • learn to care and take responsibility for themselves, each other and the environment.

  • be happy, be fulfilled.’

A great way to introduce children (and playful adults) to imaginative design, growing and caring…..mini gardens.

I had a great day’s gardening with various groups of children at Cawston Primary School, Norfolk, last week. They made great progress with digging over the various borders, watering and transplanting- as well as each sowing runner bean seeds in aid of Dr. Barnardo’s. But in addition to these rather more mundane activities it was also possible do some ‘instant gardening’.

An old willow tree stump, removed from the side of the former pond to make way for the new one a couple of years ago, lies near the entrance to the garden and was, to be honest, a bit of an eyesore. Mrs. Brett, the ‘learning outside the classroom’, co-ordinator had a great idea to make this a feature by planting it up, so I bought various bulbs, primulas, anenomes and ferns, using some of the money raised from opening up Old School Garden to the public last year.

Ann, one of the parents, and I helped the children turn this into an attractive feature.  We cleared around the old stump and used other old branches to create ‘planting pockets’ in addition to those created by the roots of the stump and filled these with old soil from a nearby spoil heap. The plants were well watered in and there’s now a colourful, rather beautiful ‘floral sculpture’ to welcome us as we enter the garden!
