Why Places Matter – new booklet for local councils and communities

Produced by Living Streets with the People and Places Coalition, of which The Glass-House is a member, the booklet is being sent to all councils in England and offers a practical manifesto for councillors and communities on how they can transform the places where they live.

The booklet also includes signposting to useful information and tools that can help communities and local councils work together effectively to shape their neighbourhoods.

Once upon a time, children were free to play rough. No longer, thanks to elf ‘n’ safety

…….boy scouts crossing a river on a makeshift rope and wooden pole bridge, enacting a rescue drill from a tall building, and building a tower of sticks – which they then climb. Before the elf ‘n’ safety police get in a tizz over these perilous activities, I should point out that the photos are 80 years old. They mark 100 years of the Altrincham, Cheshire, scout group.

The scouts’ intrepid activities would be banned today. They’d breach every rule in the over-stuffed book of no-nos that regulates our existence. Tall trees, rickety stairs, coastal paths: these are off limits today. Each involves a degree of risk, and risk-taking itself has become anathema in today’s child-rearing…..’

On Friday 5 July 2013 schools all over the country will be learning outside for Empty Classroom Day.

Empty Classroom Day is a day to celebrate all the learning that takes place outside the classroom and to encourage even more outdoor learning. The day was created by schools and organisations at London Sustainable Schools Forum and the idea is simple: One class, outdoors, for one lesson on one day.

Last year, despite the rain, over one hundred schools took part with activities ranging from planting wildflowers, bug hunting and pond-dipping to inspiring class visits to the great outdoors. The first Empty Classroom Day was a success showing that learning outside can be fun, memorable and healthy. This year lots of schools have signed up to say that one class will be learning outside for one lesson on Friday 5 July, some schools are doing even…
