A bit about the Biomes…

You could fit the Tower of London in the Rain-forest Biome. The Guinness Book of Records heralds the Biomes as the biggest conservatories in the world. Building these ‘lean-to greenhouses’ on an uneven surface that changed shape was tricky: ‘bubbles’ were used because they can settle on any shaped surface – the architect got the idea while washing up!

This lovely planting of flannel flowers and white waratah reaches its perfect, but brief, flowering peak in early spring here in a sheltered spot at ‘the workplace’ in Melbourne.

The luminosity of these flowers in the gold light at the end of the day was superb.

While the great globe heads of the waratah had been bruised by the wind this week, the flannel flowers – which look so delicate and fragile – showed no signs of harm.

The flannel refers to the soft fuzziness of the flowers and leaves, rather than suggesting the plant is somewhat dowdy.

Latin names for those of that ilk are Telopea speciosissima (red waratah) and Actinotus Helianthi (flannel flower)

At the first (gutter height) level I could look down on to the tropical border.

DSM_7421And, after a deep breath, I white-knuckle-climbed the second ladder to the chimney.  Here, I was much higher above the same outbuilding with the tropical border down one side, clipped cotoneaster along the other and the wisteria covered arbour at the far end.   The fine, stone roofed structure directly below is the woodstore.  The greenhouses can be seen through the trees.

Here are some more views from the chimney:
