The wild vining form of the wisterias is part of their allure. Where I wanted docile wisteria on a small gate arbor, I grew American wisteria. Kentucky wisteria, if available, works as well. However, the floral trusses are not so pendulous, which also defeats the purpose of growing wisteria.
