canwefeedtheworld's avatarOne Billion Hungry: Can We Feed the World?

By Stephanie Brittain

More than 800 million people suffer from chronic hunger and two billion suffer from nutrient deficiency. One in four children is stunted and one in two is malnourished. At the same time, 1.9 billion people are overweight, of which 600 million are obese. This is the current state of global nutrition; unbalanced and unequal.

healthly food for a healthy worldIn recognition of this, the Chicago Council held the London launch of their latest report “Healthy Food for a healthy World: Leveraging Agriculture and Food Security to Improve Global Nutrition” on the 2nd of June 2015.  A distinguished panel discussed the key issues that are raised in the report, including Per Pinstrup-Andersen, Chair, High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition, Montpellier Panel member Lindiwe Sibanda, CEO of the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), Catherine Bertini, Distinguished Fellow, Global Agriculture and Food…

Installing an outdoor tap is one of the most effective changes that you can make on moving to a new house with a garden. This saves time clearing up the mess walked into the house when filling watering cans or threading hosepipes through windows, as well as reducing the number of hours spent on watering. Special kits are available form DIY stores or get a plumber to install a tap for you.

Try to conserve water by having your outside tap fitted to a water butt or other container connected to catch rainwater from downpipes. Though this won’t give you the pressure of a mains or pumped supply, it will be useful for filling watering cans and the like.

HERE IT IS, IT’S THE ONE WITH THE STRAWBERRY-LIKE LEAFS AND THE YELLOW BUTTERCUP-LIKE FLOWERS. GOOD GROUNDCOVER FOR LARGE AREA’S WITH BUSHES AND TREE’S BUT BEWARE IT IS A CULPRIT, A POWERFUL GROWER AND I THINK IT’S A PRETTY PLANT, IT BLOOMS FROM APRIL TILL OKTOBER AND AFTER THE FLOWERS IT GETS BRIGHT RED STRAWBERRY-LIKE FRUITS WHO DON’ TASTE WELL. THE PLANT DISAPPEARS UNDER GROUND IN WINTER AND STARTS GROWING RAPIDLY IN SPRING.

WHEN YOU USE IT AS GROUNDCOVER WITH BUSHES WHO ARE AT LEAST 50 CM HIGH IT IS GOOD. IT SUFFOCATES ALL THE WEEDS BUT WHEN USED AS GROUNDCOVER AMONG PLANTS AND SMALL BUSHES IT WILL OVERGROW THEM ALL.
