Indian mock strawberry, latin name : potentilla indica/duchesna indica, originates from India (hence the name indica).

HERE IT IS, IT’S THE ONE WITH THE STRAWBERRY-LIKE LEAFS AND THE YELLOW BUTTERCUP-LIKE FLOWERS. GOOD GROUNDCOVER FOR LARGE AREA’S WITH BUSHES AND TREE’S BUT BEWARE IT IS A CULPRIT, A POWERFUL GROWER AND I THINK IT’S A PRETTY PLANT, IT BLOOMS FROM APRIL TILL OKTOBER AND AFTER THE FLOWERS IT GETS BRIGHT RED STRAWBERRY-LIKE FRUITS WHO DON’ TASTE WELL. THE PLANT DISAPPEARS UNDER GROUND IN WINTER AND STARTS GROWING RAPIDLY IN SPRING.

WHEN YOU USE IT AS GROUNDCOVER WITH BUSHES WHO ARE AT LEAST 50 CM HIGH IT IS GOOD. IT SUFFOCATES ALL THE WEEDS BUT WHEN USED AS GROUNDCOVER AMONG PLANTS AND SMALL BUSHES IT WILL OVERGROW THEM ALL.

As the urban environment grows, with new developments taking up brownfield sites and encroaching on greenbelt areas, there is an increasing challenge in ensuring towns and cities incorporate enough greenery and vegetation.

And of course they encourage insects and birds vital to the success of gardens.

However, in the increasingly busy urban space, the challenge is to incorporate greenery in a way that does not take up too much room.

Buy varieties of plants that are restistant to pests and diseases. If you want to grow vegetables, choose modern varieties that are easier to grow and protect them with crop covers such as insect-proof mesh or garden fleece. Encourage natural predators to take up residence in your garden by growing nectar-rich flowers, providing nesting and overwintering sites, and by feeding birds in winter. Use bilogical controls in the greenhouse.

A picture of our friends’ narrow boat yesterday. Modest, but an effective way of supplying salad! They have ambitions to extend their roof top garden, maybe some artificial grass and a putting course too?!
